English Language Learners Yokwe and welcome to ELL. ELL stands for English Language Learning. This year we have forty-three students in our ELL program at George Seitz Elementary School, from Kindergarten to 6th grade. Fifteen students come to the ELL room for instruction, either individually or in small groups. We work on English conversation, grammar practice, reading, or help understanding subjects like science, social studies, or math. For the twenty-eight other ELL students, I go into their classrooms and provide learning support for them there. Once a year, all the ELL students take an English language assessment called LAS (Language Assessment System) to measure their skill levels and progress in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. With this information, we determine if children need more or less ELL support. Using that information, plus how they are doing in their classes and in ELL, we also determine if students will be placed on Monitor status. This means that they no longer receive ELL services, but I continue to monitor and check their progress. When students test Proficient in all of the areas of the LAS, and when it is clear that they are doing well in their classes without ELL services, then they are exited from the ELL program. It is a pleasure working with the ELL students at George Seitz Elementary School! |
