Fifth Grade
The fifth grade consists of two classes of 15 students each. Each teacher has their homeroom for English and Spelling. There is cooperation between the two classes as Ms Thompson specializes in Math and Science, where Ms Bascom offers the Reading and Social Studies courses. This means that students move between classes for these subject areas. The whole 5th grade participates together in Health topics and Spelling Bees. Math The fifth grade curriculum works on reinforcing computation skills with whole numbers and decimals. Fractions and other geometry topics are introduced. Students start each lesson with a warm up for review. The previous day’s assignment is discussed before a new lesson is taught. The students receive an independent practice assignment each day for homework and are quizzed on the week’s topics at the end of the week. Their grade reflects their ability to handle daily homework assignments independently as well as their understanding of the concepts on the quizzes. Science The first half of the year covers health and the human body. The students explore the human body and ways to become a healthier more active citizen. This includes becoming a wiser consumer through recycling. The students begin to explore Earth Science through the examination of the cycles of the earth. Through the study of rocks, water, weather and finally outer space the students begin to have a small understanding of the world around them. In the second semester the curriculum covers Physical Science topics, where students investigate forces, electricity, light and sound. There is plenty of room for hands-on experimentation with the materials provided in the classroom. Importance is given to lab work that involves measuring, observing and recording. Model making is also useful in understanding the topics. Students are assigned a number of projects as well as Unit tests. Social Studies In Social Studies we have spent our time learning about Early America. We’ve studies many explorers that led the way, of early colonial times, and the many aspects of the Revolutionary War. We will now be learning how the United States grew after gaining its Independence from Britain. Reading In Reading we use short stories and various novels to excel in comprehension and fluency. We have been focusing on polishing our study skills by being diligent and paying attention to detail. To enhance our Reading program we use the Reading Counts award system to encourage 5th graders to read independently for enjoyment and understanding. Ms. Thompson's class visits the kindergarten class for Reading Buddies and Helping Hands. Ms. Bascom's class visits the 2nd grade Reading Buddies for paired reading once a week. The teachers also spend time daily reading novels aloud to the students. |
