Sixth Grade Ms. Yurovchak (Rm 20) Ms. Jahnke (Rm 21) We have so much fun in 6th grade! In our classes you get to explore and learn… Social Studies: We bring ancient civilization alive with hands-on projects and thematic units. Student research various aspects of life from the time era we study and create visual representations of people, places and artifacts. Some six-grade favorites include: Mesopotamian newspapers; Ancient China Unit; Egyptian Unit (life size mummies, hieroglyphs, etc); Greek Unit (6th grade Olympics) and Roman simulation activities (Ending with Roman Banquet); Medieval Unit (Feudal Class System); Renaissance (painting the pretend Sistine Chapel); and the World at War Unit. English: Each class is broken into two parts: writing and grammar review. The first part of class is spent going over lesson homework in grammar, and the other half of class is spent doing writing activities for each of the writing modes. Once a week students write in their journals on different topics given by the teacher. Reading: 6th grade uses a novel based curriculum. We encompass a variety of literary elements, vocabulary development and reading strategies with each novel we read. Most novels tie in with our social studies curriculum. We also pair novels together for students to choose from, such as Mara, Daughter of the Nile and Egypt Game. Each week we also spend one day reading orally to our students. Currently, we are reading Jack Sparrow, The Coming Storm, and plan to end our novel with an island treasure hunt and walk the plank party. Students are introduced to different genres, like science fiction and fantasy, throughout the year. Math: Throughout the year students will work on consolidating their computation and problem solving skills. They are introduced to pre-algebra in preparation for 7th grade. Students are heterogeneously grouped according to what extra help or challenge they might benefit from. 6th graders are also grouped to work on investigations involving pieces of fudge, bounces on a pool table, and the number of cops on NY City streets. Science: Life Science is the first year of a Middle School curriculum. Students use text and hands-on labs to explore the living world, their environment and human body. 6th graders enjoy looking at cells under microscopes, setting up live experiments, growing mold and other seeds, making models of DNA and the human body; and mummifying a Cornish game hen. |
