Living on Roi-Namur

Roi-Namur is the home of KREMS, the United States’ most sophisticated and important research and development radar site. Roi-Namur, located approximately 50 miles north of Kwajalein, is served daily by commuter aircraft. The island is approximately two miles long and three-quarters of a mile wide.

Approximately 100 people live on Roi-Namur. With workers who commute from Kwajalein and Ennuburr, the daily work force on Roi-Namur numbers approximately 325. Transportation between the islands is by commuter airplane, catamaran and barge. Work hours vary with pro-gram requirements and flight schedules. Considerable departure from normal working hours can be expected during special tests and mission-related activities.

Some people find the flight between Kwajalein and Roi enjoyable, a chance to read or nap, while some greet the trip with less enthusiasm. Working on another island requires some adjustments for employees who can’t get home at a moment’s notice and for families used to having mom or dad home for lunch.
