Shopping

Island regulations require proper identification for shopping at any retail facility. Every resident age 10 and older is issued a badge which serves as ID for shopping.

Bargain Bazaar

A thrift store staffed by island volunteers is opened 3 days per week.

AAFES Shoppette

The Shoppette is similar to a Stateside drugstore. It carries a limited selection of high quality products in dry groceries, personal care items, stationery, paper products, laundry supplies, magazines and paperback books. They also offer tobacco products and Class Six items that include high end spirits and wine for the connoisseurs. You may stop by for fresh-brewed cof-fee, single-serve beverages, fresh-grilled hot dogs, and breakfast sandwiches. Gift cards are also available for sale, including prepaid calling cards. DVD’s are also available for rent.

Micronesian Handicraft Shop

The shop serves island residents and visitors offering handmade crafts from the islands of Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae, Palau, and other islands throughout the Marshall Islands. It is staffed by volunteers.

AAFES PX

The PX carries a limited selection of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, shoes, linens, cosmetics, jewelry, furniture, gift items, and luggage.

AAFES PXtra

At the PXtra you will find the latest technology in the selection of TV’s, DVD and Blu-Ray players, Home Theater System, IPOD accessories, and cameras. Also located at the PXtra are the outdoor living section, sporting goods, house wares, hardware, pet supplies, and toys.

Surfway

Surfway is the island’s primary grocery store, stocking a variety of essentials and a limited selection of specialty items. Dairy products are brought in from Hawaii. Fresh produce is flown in twice a week from California and Hawaii. Seasonal items such as blueberries, strawberries and watermelon are frequently available. Meats and fish are frozen, however, some thawed items are for sale daily in the chilled section. Cold cuts, cheeses and other deli items are also available. Customers can order special cuts of meat. Frozen breads, rolls, bagels and English muffins are available. Because all food and supplies must be imported, variety is limited and discount brands are not available. Shortages occur from time to time and island cooks soon grow accustomed to adapting their menus to what is available. Groceries are delivered to your quarters.
