Length of Course: 2 Semesters
Units of Credits: 1 Credit
Recommendation: “C” or better in Algebra I (or Algebra IA and
Algebra IB)
Brief Course Description:
This course
is designed for students who have successfully completed Algebra
I (or Algebra IA and Algebra IB). Emphasis is placed on two and
three dimensional figures, reasoning, coordinate, and
transformational geometry as well as using models to solve
problems. General problem solving and algebraic problem solving
techniques with a variety of applications will be used.
Students are encouraged to develop reasoning skills to aid
problem solving and to express their conclusions in a clear,
coherent manner. In addition, this course also introduces
students to the deductive method including using paragraph
proofs, two-column proofs, coordinate proofs, and verbal
arguments in order to prove theorems or justify reasoning. A
gradual development of using proofs is encouraged. Calculators
are used when appropriate, although students are encouraged to
determine exact solutions to problems before approximating with
calculators. When appropriate, technology is used to motivate
concepts, gain insights, and enhance student learning.
