Brief Course Description:
This course
is designed for students who have successfully completed
elementary mathematics but are not yet prepared for
Pre-Algebra. The goal of the course is concept building in
arithmetic. Therefore, the class begins with a thorough review
of arithmetic topics, yet focuses not only on mathematic skill
building but also on learning concepts which will be presented
with more depth at the Pre-Algebra level. In addition, students
work on problems designed to promote mathematical reasoning and
problem solving. Major topics include basic arithmetic, place
value, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, basic geometry,
basic algebra, measurement, order of operations (including
exponents and square roots), elementary probability and
statistics, signed numbers, and problem solving.
