Brief Course Description:
Pre-Algebra
is a course designed to firmly ground students in middle school
mathematics topics and to provide a broad introduction to
algebraic concepts. The course is similar in scope and sequence
to an accelerated Pre-Algebra course, but accommodates students
from a wide range of skills and backgrounds. It is assumed that
students enrolled in Pre-Algebra have already mastered the
topics covered in Intermediate Math (basic operations with
positive and negative whole numbers, fractions, decimals,
percents and percent applications, geometry, angle types,
polygons and circles, perimeters/circumferences, areas) and are
able to compute accurately. The student will then extend his
knowledge of math in the areas of variables, solving equations
and inequalities using transformations, positive and negative
exponents, scientific notation, graphing and geometry. A great
deal of emphasis will be given to word problem applications in
these areas.
